Overwatch League: Week 4 Tier List & Power Rankings

Overwatch League: Week 4 Tier List and Power Rankings

Written by: Landon McBee
This weekend, we see the debut of the Atlanta Reign and other powerhouse matches. This article is going to be my take on the teams going into week 4 of the 2020 Overwatch League season. If you missed my article detailing my predictions for the matches this weekend, you can find it here.

Tier List

Going into this week, there are so many unknowns due to how many teams simply have not had the chance to play an actual match so far this season and the incredibly small sample size for other teams.

When creating the above tier list there were a few different things I took into consideration.

  1. What being in each tier means in terms of skill
  2. Performance so far this season
  3. Projected performance for teams that are yet to play.

When considering these three things, I was able to come up with the above tier list. The tiers all mean different levels of skill. For example, S+ is the best of the best while S are teams that are able to make a run for that spot. Tiers A-C represent the more middle of the pack teams. D represents a point of no return. Sadly, these are teams that, going into this week are in an a bad place. However, it is important to note that, while Houston Outlaws some teams came close, no team has made it to the F tier yet. This is because while the D tier teams have been performing very poorly, there are still signs of life in these teams - no matter how small. For articles to come, F tier will be reserved if there is ever a team I feel has no chance of winning anymore games.

Power Rankings

Going into week 4 of the Overwatch League, I have created a set of power rankings as well as my tier list you saw above. For my power rankings, I felt the top 5 and bottom two teams were fairly simple to come up with, but somewhere in the middle, the rankings became harder and harder to come up with. As you can see, there is a gap between Houston Outlaws and the rest of the teams. That is because I did not include teams that have not played yet unless they are playing this week like Atlanta Reign.

The most difficult decision was probably deciding where to put Atlanta. Because Atlanta is still yet to play this season, the only things I had to go off of for this team was the strength of their roster on paper. After considering the, quite frankly, terrifying DPS duo of Edison and Erster, the diverse four-man tank line, and the support line as well, I can't help but see Atlanta as a top five team - at least. Honestly, in my mind I can see the Reign being number two going into week 4. This is especially the case because the meta plays into their hands significantly. When looking at this team, I think most would consider the support line to be the weakest link, but after the drastic improvements from Dogman and the insane performances we saw from Masaa last year, I would say that this team's "weakest link" is not even weak whatsoever. That even goes without pointing out that this Ana/Lucio centered meta we have been in plays to the strengths of this support line so much.

For the rest of the power rankings, I just went by a team-by-team basis to slot teams. If one team is above another team, then going into week 4, I believe that is the better team.
